Equine Vaccination Recommendations

 

A vaccination program should be tailored for each individual horse/stable. It is based on risk factors such as the age of the horse, traffic in the barn, and the reproductive status of the horse.

 

CORE VACCINATIONS FOR ALL HORSES - ANNUALLY (after initial series)

  • EEE
  • WEE
  • Tetanus
  • Rabies
  • West Nile Virus (WNV)
  • Rhino/Flu (EHV1, EHV4, influenza)

RISK-BASED VACCINATIONS FOR BOARDING STABLES, TRAINING STABLES, SHOW HORSES AND TRAIL RIDING

  • Rhino/Flu (EHV1, EHV4, influenza) - Booster every 6 months
  • Strangles - Booster annually
  • Potomac Horse Fever (consult with veterinarian regarding potential risk; annually vaccinate following initial 2-dose series)

 BROODMARES

  • Rhinopneumonitis (EHV 1/Pneumabort K) at 5, 7, and 9 months of gestation
  • Rhino/Flu, EEE, WEE, Tetanus, and WNV 4-6 weeks prepartum
  • Rabies, pre-breeding

FOALS

  • Same vaccinations as for adults
  • Tetanus at birth, exam & IgG levels within 12-24 hours of birth
  • Most vaccinations require an initial multi-dose series
  • Other vaccines should be started prior to weaning at approximately 3-6 months of age
